Bagley, Byrd and Rimes expected to breakout

Bagley, Byrd and Rimes expected to breakout

Copperas Cove running back Brandin Byrd and Giddings running back Eric Rimes have been listed by Texas Football Magazine as possible breakout candidates for the 2008 season.

As a sophomore, Byrd rushed for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Byrd didn’t get a lot of carries but had a signature performance in Copperas Cove’s 15-9 win over Aledo in the Class 4A, Division I semifinals. With star running back Troy Vital on the sideline tending to an injury, Byrd rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries.

As a freshman, Rimes got minimal varsity playing time but his touches are expected to increase in 2008.

San Marcos junior linebacker Blake Bagley was also listed as a possible breakout player.

9. Copperas Cove

Team motto: Get tuit

Last year: 12-3, Class 4A Division I state finalists

Past five years: 53-13 (.803)

2007: Off — 36.8 ppg Def — 17.2 ppg

Hello: Class 5A, LB Tanner Brock, WR Josh Boyce, OL Anthony Mackey

Goodbye: Class 4A, QB Robert Griffin (Baylor), RB Troy Vital (Idaho)

Why the Bulldawgs are No. 9: Don't look for much of a drop off now that the Cove — which has made two straight 4A state title games — is back in 5A; the Dawgs were a consistent top 10 team in 5A earlier this decade. There's a new QB, but he'll have weapons on offense, and the defense should again be very good.

On schedule:

Date Opponent '07 result

Aug. 29 at S.A. Central W, 33-0

Hornets are one of seven playoff teams on the Dawgs' schedule

Sept. 5 Waco L, 27-21

The Lions have now beaten the Dawgs two years in a row

Sept. 12 at McKinney Boyd W, 48-26

Last year's victory came in the Class 4A state quarterfinals

Sept. 26 Ellison* DNP

The Eagles are moving to a Wing-T offense under a new coach

Oct. 3 at Temple* DNP

Wildcats RB Lache Seastrunk will be one of state's top players

The Vikings are expected to contend for the fourth playoff spot

Oct. 17 at Belton* DNP

Tigers QB Kevin Thornton had only one start in '07, in the finale

Oct. 24 Shoemaker* W, 63-12

The Grey Wolves' defense is young, but the secondary is stout

This Halloween matchup probably will decide the district crown

Cove QB club to host clinic for women
Cove QB club to host clinic for women Posted on: Wednesday, August 06, 2008, 5:26 PM
Special to the Herald

The annual Central Texas Football Clinic for Women is Aug. 21. Hosted by the Copperas Cove Quarterback Club, Central Texas women will have the opportunity to have fun and learn about football.

“This event is really going to be a lot of fun” said Arlene Vitucci, committee chair. “If you love football or love someone who loves football, this is for you. We’ll learn about football in air-conditioned comfort.

“We’ve got a great format planned out for women to really have a chance to learn more about the game. We’ll have a nice catered dinner, enjoy some door prizes, and learn about the game of football. This year, the clinic will concentrate on penalties.”

Participants will have a chance to get some one-on-one coaching from current Copperas Cove coaches. Offense, defense and special teams will all be covered by the coaches.

Also included in the line-up of events is a football fashion show, which will show off the latest collection of football gear used by this year’s Bulldawgs. Always wanted to try on a helmet or shoulder pads? You’ll get a chance to do just that.

Fans also will be given the chance to purchase souvenirs and spirit items from the Cove Quarterback Club and the Band Boosters. Attendees will also receive a free goody bag.

The Central Texas Football Clinic for Women kicks off at 6 p.m. with registration at the Holy Family Catholic Church Social Hall in Copperas Cove. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.

Registration for the event is $15 and only advance tickets will be sold. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased at the Holy Family Catholic Church office. Clinic participants must be at least high school age.

To learn more or to register for this event, visit the Holy Family Catholic Church office, 1001 Georgetown Rd., or call 547-3735.

Brock Commits to TCU
Cove linebacker Brock commits to TCU Posted on: Sunday, August 10, 2008, 6:30 AM
By Evan Mohl
Killeen Daily Herald

The Horned Frogs snatched up another Bulldawg.

Copperas Cove linebacker Tanner Brock committed to Texas Christian University earlier this week, joining ex-Dawg and brother Logan Brock, a red-shirt freshman, in Fort Worth.

The verbal agreement was confirmed on Saturday by Cove coach Jack Welch.

Brock wanted to get his college choice out of the way before the season started. He thought it was best to focus on Bulldawg football and the task at hand: a state championship in 5A after reaching back-to-back titles in Class 4A.

"Tanner wanted to get this out of the way and not let his future be a distraction during the middle of the season," Welch said. "He wants the fall to be about the Bulldawgs."

Brock was not immediately available for comment. He was en route to Fort Worth to spend time with Logan and watch TCU practice.

Cove's senior captain is considered one of the top recruits in Texas. He's ranked as the 32nd best linebacker in the nation and the 66th best player in the state by Rivals.com. In addition, Brock is a two-time all-state selection and was picked to the third team in this year's Texas Football magazine Super Team.

Heading into 2008, Brock has recorded 428 total tackles. It's likely he will become the leading tackler for a program that has a long lineage of linebacker greats such as: T.J. Hollowell, who played at Nebraska and in the NFL, John McKinney, who played for the University of Arizona, and Tariq Peterson, who played at the University of Iowa.

"Tanner's a heck of a player," Welch said of his linebacker.

Brock chose TCU over several other big-name schools including: Arizona State, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Purdue and Wisconsin.

The decision, though, was not about prestige or being in a big conference, but rather about familiarity and proximity to home.

Last year, Brock attended all the Horned Frog home games. He got to know the place, the team and the system.

"I think Tanner really felt comfortable with TCU," Welch said. "It's close to home, it's a scheme similar to ours that he knows and understands and it's family atmosphere."

The Horned Frogs have taken a liking to Cove football players in recent years. Besides the Brock brothers, TCU has shown interest in wideout Josh Boyce and offensive lineman Anthony Mackey.

Griffin, medals for Bears in finals

DES MOINES, Iowa – No local athletes won national championships on Friday, but Baylor freshmen Robert Griffin III of Copperas Cove and Tiffany Townsend of Killeen both captured bronze medals.

Running his third race in as many days, Griffin clocked a 49.55 in the 400 hurdles for a third-place finish at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Griffin got out to a slow start, but was able to close well to secure a bronze.

Still, Griffin remained disappointed after his race since he didn't achieve his goal of winning a championship.

"I'm not satisfied with my results, I came here to win and that didn't happen," Griffin said over the phone. "I didn't get out well from the start, which really hurt me. But I was able to close in the last 200 meters, which is something I can build on."

Jeshua Anderson, a freshman from Washington State, and Rueben McCoy, a senior from Auburn, bested Griffin. Anderson ran a 48.69, while McCoy posted a 48.71.

Besides his bronze medal, Griffin finished his first collegiate track season with a Big 12 Championship, a Midwest Regional Championship and a Midwest Regional record in the 400 hurdles.

However, Griffin may not be done for the year. It's very likely the Baylor freshman will be headed to the Olympic Team Trials at the end of the month in Eugene, Ore. While he has not earned an automatic invitation with any of his times (49.00 seconds or better), Griffin's personal best of 49.22 should place him well within the top 28 times in the country this year.

"The trip to the Olympic Trials is not set in stone, but it's going to happen," Griffin said. "My time is No. 8 in the country (before today's races), so I expect to be in Oregon at the end of the month ready to test the waters."

Cove ex shines in Baylor spring game

Cove ex shines in Baylor spring game

Killeen Dailiy Herald

WACO – Former Copperas Cove standout Robert Griffin III wasn't the first quarterback to take the field at Baylor's spring football game, but he was arguably the best.

Griffin led the Bears to 22 of their 31 points, including a 17-yard touchdown run that looked like it was straight out of Cove coach Jack Welch's playbook. Griffin took the snap from the shotgun and faked a handoff that sent the defense scampering toward the near sideline. Griffin kept the ball and ran the other way untouched into the end zone.

Griffin, who entered the scrimmage on the second offensive set, led the Bears to two 70-yard drives and one 46-yard drive. The true freshman finished the day with 35 yards rushing on five carries and completed six of 10 passes for 75 yards in just three series.

"I thought Robert did a good job," Baylor co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Phillip Montgomery said. "The best part about his performance was that he moved the ball down the field. He took control of the huddle, kept drives alive, made smart decisions, took care of the football and was pretty accurate throwing."

Griffin made such an impression in his debut that Bears fans were drooling over the potential of their possible future starting quarterback. After the scrimmage, the Copperas Cove native signed the back of kids' T-shirts and took pictures with parents.

"I'm never satisfied with what I do, but I thought I did a pretty good job today," Griffin said. "We moved the ball and it went pretty smoothly."

Griffin is one of three players competing for the Baylor starting quarterback job. University of Miami (Fla.) transfer and fifth-year senior Kirby Freeman along with incumbent Blake Szymanksi are also getting looks from the Bears coaching staff.

Copperas Cove’s Jennifer Eveson makes a bench press attempt Saturday at the Texas High School State Woman’s Powerlifting Meet at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Everson placed fifth.

Killeen Daily Herald

As the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association Girls Powerlifting state competition came to a close on Saturday afternoon, Copperas Cove seniors Lauren Cox and Jennifer Eveson came to the end of their four-year powerlifting careers.

The pair have been in powerlifting since their freshman year, with this year being Cox's fourth in the state competition and Eveson's first in Region II Class 4A.

Cox got disqualified her freshman year but placed her sophomore and junior years, finishing second last year in the superheavy weight class. As a senior, Cox was disqualified again on a judge call during her squats.

"I'm excited even though I DQ'd again in my senior year," said Cox. "But I'm going to be doing it for four more years at (Texas) A&M so I can't be too upset."

Cox also was the recipient of one of two Region II scholarships for $500. The other was Megan Starky of Gatesville.

"I'm super excited (Cox) got that scholarship because it's going to help her with her education and she's going to powerlift for four more years," said first-year coach Missy Mitchell. "It couldn't have gone to anybody that deserved it more."

Eveson, in her first state competition, placed fifth in the 104-pound weight class and was able to medal with a combined weight of 580 pounds (squat, bench and deadlift).

"I'm excited but I'm sad because it's my last year," said Eveson. "So it's a lot of mixed emotions really. I wish I could do it in college but my college (Tarleton State in Stephenville) doesn't have (powerlifting).

"I wish I could've gone (to) more (state competitions)."

For Eveson, her combined weight was up 10 pounds from her previous best.

"I'm really excited for Jen because she improved her total and she medaled in her first year at the state meet," said Mitchell. "Jen and Lauren are great kids. I'm proud of everything they did this season."

A total of seven state records were set and two were tied in the two-day competition. In the 105 class, Megan Fotenot (Little Cypress-Mauriceville) set two records; one for total pounds (760, up from 715) and the other for squat (315, up from 285).

In the 181 class, Beaonca Jacobo (Banquete) tied the squat record of 450. Marci Hise (Georgetown) tied the total pound record of 1,060. In the 198 class, Alex Goddeau (Crosby) set a squat record of 430, beating the previous mark by five.

In the 220 class, Jasmine Montgomery (Basqueville) set a deadlift of 435, up five pounds from the previous record.

In the super heavyweight class, Savannah Rosales (Edna) broke the record of 585 in the squat with her lift of 590. Katie Sons (Sanger) set a bench press record of 290,

breaking the previous record by 20.

In Region II Class 4A, Calhoun finished first with 32 points, followed by Corpus Christi Calallen (24) and Beevile (22).
